Strings of the Baylor Symphony Orchestra in Concert

Viewers at home can enjoy a performance of The Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s next concert of 2021 by going to the School of Music website for an online streaming opportunity.

The concert, featuring sixty-five string players from this award-winning orchestra, will take place on Thursday, April 29, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s program will open with Professor Stephenn Heyde conducting French composer Marcel Grandjany’s Aria in Classic Style, Op. 19. This piece is scored for harp and string orchestra, and the BSO harpist will be Claire Learned, a freshman from Germantown, Tennessee.

Next, the orchestra will play American composer Thomas Canning’s Fantasy on a Hymn Tune by Justin Morgan, a work from 1944 that was inspired by Ralph Vaughan Williams’s hugely successful Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Canning’s piece, based on the tune “Amanda” by early American hymn singer and composer Justin Morgan, features two solo string quartets.

The program will conclude with Four Novelletten, Op. 52, by English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. These works for string orchestra date from 1903.

This concert by string players of the Baylor Symphony Orchestra was recorded for a premiere streaming on April 29. To join the virtual audience, go to the School of Music website at baylor.edu/music/live.
