STYROFOAM Recycling: Drive-Through Collection
The Waco Friends of the Climate is holding its free quarterly styrofoam recycling event. The drive-through collection site will be the Cobbs Recycling Center, 2021 N 44th St., Waco 76710.
Participants will stay in their cars, as volunteers remove the styrofoam from trunks and car interiors. All participants should wear masks regardless of vaccination status.
Styrofoam accepted: cups & other food containers, large blocks and molded pieces. Small pieces may be aggregated in bags. Not accepted: lids, peanuts, and non-styrofoam materials. All styrofoam should be clean & dry.
Styrofoam will be used to create dense plastic bricks/ingots. These bricks are used to produce products such as picture frames, rulers, keyboard parts, phone chasses, pallets, & eyeglass frames.
Recycling styrofoam has multiple benefits: it keeps the plastic out of the landfill, where it releases toxins; keeps the material out of the land, air and ocean, where it creates ugly litter; prevents the plastic from being eaten by animals, where it may cause illness or death; prevents the styrofoam from entering the human food chain, where it may be harmful to humans; helps mitigate the climate crisis, as making plastic thru recycling releases much less GHG emissions than the production of new virgin plastic; prevents microplastic from interfering with the lifecycle of phytoplankton & zooplankton, both vital for our ecosystem.
